How Many Awkward Patrick Swayze Jokes are in '50/50'? (And 24 Other Urgent Questions)

This weekend, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen release their new cancer comedy '50/50.' Gordon-Levitt stars as Adam, a writer/producer at a public radio station in Seattle who works with his pot-enthusiast friend Kyle (Rogen). Is '50/50' a big stretch for Seth Rogen? Is '50/50' really a comedy? As a service, here is an answer to every query you could possibly have about '50/50.' Q: So far, is '50/50' your favorite movie of the year? A: Yes. Q: Wait, is this the movie about rap music? The one that stars 50/50? A: No. You're thinking of 50 Cent in 'Get Rich or Die Tryin.' Q: Then who is 50/50? A: There is no musical artist named 50/50. '50/50' is the story of Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and the title refers to his chances of survival. Q: From the nine bullet wounds? A: Again, that's 50 Cent. Adam, as far as we know, has never been shot. He's an otherwise healthy human male who discovers that he has a rare form of spinal cancer. Q: The advertisements have led me to believe that the plot of '50/50' consists primarily of Seth Rogen using his friend's cancer as a way to meet girls. A: Those ads are misleading. There is one scene in which this happens, but that is far from the central plot of '50/50.' Q: Is '50/50' based on a true story? A: Sort of. The story, written by Will Reiser, is very loosely based on his own experiences with cancer. Q: How is Seth Rogen in '50/50'? A: Rogen -- who is also the producer -- plays Kyle, a marijuana loving co-worker and friend to Adam. Rogen provides just the right amount of comedic interjections in what is really a pretty grim subject. Q: What's one of the biggest differences between fact and fiction? A: Adam's chemotherapy plays a big role in '50/50,' in reality, Will Reiser never experienced chemotherapy. Q: And Rogen being a marijuana-loving co-worker, is that made up, too? A: No. That aspect is very much true. Q: What show did Rogen and Reiser both work on? A: Rogen and Reiser were both writers for 'Da Ali G Show' when Reiser became sick. Q: Will Reiser is obviously still alive, should I assume that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Adam survives the movie, too? A: There are more than enough facts changed in '50/50' that no assumptions should be made about the outcome. Honestly, with 15 minutes left in the movie, I had no idea what the end result would be. Q: What's the best scene in '50/50.' A: Aided by marijuana-laced cookies, Adam completes his first round of chemotherapy. The following scene of Adam walking out of the cancer ward is one of the most surreal things seen on film this year. Q: What was the most pleasant surprise in '50/50'? A: Matt Frewer (née Max Headroom) as a fellow cancer patient, Mitch. Q: Didn't Max Headroom have a hit music single in the 1980s? A: Max Headroom was featured in the group Art of Noise's 1986 song, Paranoimia. Q: How is Adam Sandler in '50/50'? A: I think you may be confusing '50/50' for either '50 First Dates' or 'Funny People,' I'm not sure which -- but '50/50' is much better than '50 First Dates' and 'Funny People' Q: If you're going to be blurbed in the commercials this weekend for '50/50,' what quote do you think will be used?" A: "'50/50' is much better than '50 First Dates'!" -- Mike Ryan, Moviefone Q: How many kind-of awkward Patrick Swayze jokes are in '50/50'? A: One. Q: What's the worst aspect of '50/50'? A: Adam's father has Alzheimer's disease -- which officially makes 2011 "The Year of Fathers with Alzheimer's Disease in Movies." Though, to be fair, it does lead to a touching moment near the end of the movie. Q: What other movies in 2011 feature fathers with Alzheimer's? A: 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' and 'Friends with Benefits.' Q: Aren't Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard in '50/50'? A: Yes. Howard plays Adam's not-that-great girlfriend Rachel, while Kendrick plays Katie, Adam's therapist. Katie is assigned as Adam's therapist in order to help him deal with what he's going through with his illness. Also, Adam is only Katie's third patient -- which leads to awkward moments. Q: Does Gordon-Levitt's Adam have any similarities to Tom, his character in '(500) Days of Summer'? A: Tom and Adam both look very much like each other and they both have an affinity for pancakes. Q: How many references are there to Kuato from 'Total Recall' in '50/50'? A: One. Q: How many times have you plagiarized from yourself in this piece from the one you wrote about '50/50' on Tuesday? A: Twice. Q: Did I see you crying during '50/50'? A: No, I was cutting onions. Q: They let you cut onions during press screenings? A: It was almost lunchtime and I thought onions would taste good on my sandwich. I realize it's annoying to the other attendees, but that's what I was doing. Also, there was something in my eye. So, yes, between the onions and having something in my eye, I could see how someone would misconstrue that I was crying. You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter. Follow Moviefone on Twitter. Request Matt: The Completely New Season, Plus Fringe, Mentalist, Prime Suspect plus much more!

Rachel Bilson As opening nights go, last Monday's kickoff for the fall season was pretty spectacular. Using the 2 Charlies laid to relaxation (and Sheen charred within the celebrity roast), we'll observe two and a half Males stacks up, with the relaxation of CBS' comedy selection. Adding high-profile dinosaurs for the mix now, and it must be another fascinating evening.First, the completely new shows, from Fall Preview:My primary Undertake Fox's Terra Nova (two-hour premiere at 8/7c): "Bigger isn't necessarily better, however in cases like this, it may be enough. Terra Nova will win no honours due to its pressboard figures and cumbersome writing, but hey, it's CGI dinosaurs! This really is really the fall's grandest escape and riskiest swing." To elaborate: This lavishly produced family-friendly sci-fi time-travel adventure isn't what you'd call edgy - from Steven Spielberg, it's Jurassic bark, while not much bite - plus it lays round the "beginning over" schmaltz just a little heavily after we have a family using a Stargate-like portal in to a settlement 85 million years inside the prehistoric past around the separate time stream, giving humans another chance to make a civilization without destroying our planet. (The dystopian prologue helps make the area of Edge Runner appear just like a musical comedy.) If you are in a position to ensure it is past the exposition, as well as the serious family clichés - a edgy teenage boy, an unpleasant brainiac daughter - there are many satisfying dino action. Plus it all looks gorgeous. Precious little on network TV feels as if an "event" (not to be mistaken using the Large Event) any more, so when this can't possess a bite in the competition, it may be a while before we view its like again.Want more fall TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!Not necessarily worth a nibble might be the CW's Hart of Dixie (9/8c), about this we written in Fall Preview: "Couldn't blame the South for threatening to secede again after sampling this patronizingly phony, city-sea food-out-of-backwater lump of country-friend hokum. Our hearts visit the appealing stars locked in this cloying bayou of cutesy quicksand." To elaborate - should i have to? - this asks us to consider The O.C.'s chirpy but brittle Rachel Bilson just like a aspirant heart surgeon named Zoe Hart (get it?) who's adopted against her will for the twee burg of Bluebell, Ala., where she's bequeathed a kindly country doctor's bucolic practice. This really is really the South with the Warner Bros. backlot, getting a dog alligator (named Burt Reynolds) and belles in "cotillion chic" pinafores and umbrellas. The show will receive a momentary lift when Zoe meets a close lawyer carried out by Scott Porter (Friday Evening Lights' Jason Street), but doggone it, he's installed on a catty debutante named Lemon (!), whose father might be the town's rival physician. Watching Hart of Dixie is similar to mainlining praline. Your brain will rot before your teeth do. Any resemblance with a charming hamlet like Gilmore Girls' Stars Hollow is simply inside the producers' minds.THE LAUGH TRACK: Coming off last week's blockbuster comeback, CBS' two and a half Males (9/8c) has another ace up its sleeve: the wonderful Judy Greer, guesting since the ex of lovelorn Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher). ... More reason for CBS celebration: the surprise Emmy win by Melissa McCarthy in addition to comedy actress for Mike & Molly (9:31/8:31c), which begins season two while using title couple lately engaged.SIGNING OFF: Undertaking a daylong marathon in the entire first season, Syfy's Alphas systems (10/9c) while using team caught between Danger Signal as well as the Department of Defense since the war will get worse. ... On Showtime, battles may also be brewing on Weeds (10/9c) as well as the Large C (10:30/9:30c) their seasons finish. The focus of Weeds can be a sister smackdown between Nancy and sister Jill (Jennifer Jason Leigh), throughout The Big C, Cathy's husband Paul assumes their insurance carrier, while Trina runs a marathon in memory of Lee (Hugh Dancy).LATE Evening TUNES: Comedy Central's The Colbert Report (11:30/10:30c) develops to have an hour the first time, in recognition of special guest Radiohead. ... NBC's Late Evening With Jimmy Fallon (12:35/11:35c) honors Pink Floyd all week. Tonight's tribute features The Shins inside their first TV appearance in four years, playing "Breathe" within the Gloomy in the Moon. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason can be a scheduled interview guest. On Tuesday, Roger Waters stops by, and works "Inside the Flesh" while using Foo Mma fighters.Just what else is on? ... Is it possible to believe PBS' Sesame Street is 42 years old? The completely new season starts today (check local records), which is already creating a stir while using Muppets' inspired parody of Glee, titled (what else) G. ... ABC's The Kids only decided to be yearly from turning 42 if the was unceremoniously canceled the other day. Within the place, we have a combination cooking/talk show titled The Chew (1 pm/ET), a prospect that numerous daytime experts have discovered difficult to swallow. ... In the Wager News exclusive, The Best Choice Solutions Black America (7:30/6:30c airs on Centric at 8/7c), Leader Obama addresses the economic crisis which is impact on the African-American community in the one-on-one with journalist Emmett Burns. ... Lightning-fly fishing rod participants Chaz Bono and Nancy Sophistication live to bop another week on ABC's Dwts (8/7c), this time around around challenged with either the Jive or perhaps the Quickstep. ... On ABC Family's The Lounging Game (8/7c), Sutton finally is available in person along with her (and Emma's) mother. ... Following a emotional fireworks on last week's opener of Castle (10:01/9:01c), things lighten just a little as Castle and Beckett look for a vigilante who's carrying out his killing spree in superhero guise. Such A Friday Brawl! Moneyball Wins #1, Lion King three dimensional Holds #2, Dolphin Tale #3, Abduction #4 + Killer Elite #5 Underwhelm

FRIDAY11 PM, 2NDUPDATE: Finally, I've some clarityfollowing Rentrak hiccups throughout your day and early evening. To not mentionevery studio’s confusion within the ordering from the 5 Best due to fierce fights happening in the United States box office throughout today. And, geez,I’m said to be on holiday: 1. My sources say The new sony’s newcomerMoneyball continues to be rising because the evening continues for maybe the very best baseball-designed opening ever. It’s definitelyNo. 1 Friday with roughly $6.8M from 2,993 theaters. (Like a The new sony professional explained, “$six million could be great. $7 million amazing. $8 million will be a triumph.”) Having a healthy adult bump tomorrow, it’s searching in a $21M weekend. That solid number assists in keeping Kaira Pitt’s star wattage shining and the honours chances climbing because ofthis well-examined male-centric sports movie.Audiences really loved this pic: it received all A’s — male, female, youthful, old — from CinemaScore. But an adversary studio professional highlights, “The audience is extremely old – almost 60% of audience 50 plus.” 2. Even Disney is surprised that it is Lion King three dimensional is within second place tonight from 2,330 theaters after its huge first-place finish last weekend. But rival galleries let me know itgot a lift today in the rain backEast for any $6.2M Friday foran excellent your hands on-31% froma week ago.Using the normal kiddie matinee bump, that’s a $21M weekend too. This re-release isprojectedto hit a cume of $60M by Monday. Here’s my question: Why do in most the marketing hype I’ve been sent through the studio relating to this pic, nobody at Disney is saying thanks to Jeffrey Katzenberg for micro-controlling the initial? C’mon, Mouse House, give credit where credit arrives. Even when Jeffrey is really a large discomfort ineveryone’s ass. 3. A little way behind is Alcon Entertainment’s Dolphin Tale in 3,507 theaters.Distributor Warner Brossaid it opened up with $5M today and rival galleries think it’s headed to $17M for that weekend.Alcon is expectingthe heartstrings-tugging pic to leap 60% on Saturday due to the household film bump and win the weekend.Hmm. Remember,it’s also playing within the most theaters.According toCinemaScores, parents and kidsaudiences are passing on a b+. “The film is extremely inspiring, and monitoring is terrific. We'll own the household marketplace,” an professional explained.Warner Bros was searching to provide Moneyball a run for No. 1this weekend, but didn’t anticipate the ongoing strength of Lion King three dimensional. The process for Dolphin Tale ended up being to achieve mainly adults and children with this particular real-lifestory andfine ensemble cast. The studiodevised an extremely lengthy trailer campaign to be able to get maximum exposurebeginning in April and playing with the summer time on from Rio to Cars 2.The Television strategy wasrobust, covering from kids cable at the end of summer time before school began, through key season premieres for example Dancing Using The Stars and Greatest Loser,to several sponsorships with Discovery, Teen Nick, Lifetime, Nation Geographic, Disney XD, MTV, and much more.Warner Bros crafted a hostile word-of-mouth screening program that involved 3 full roundsin the very best 60 marketplaces. Military and home schoolers were specific too asyouth groups along with other family-oriented orgs. The director and cast completed a 7-market PA tour that includeda junket to support Winter, the actual-existence star from the film who had her ownlive Winter-cam.Online, there is afirst-time integration using the Spongebob Squarepants Facebook page given thesea theme. 4.Lionsgate’s Abduction in 3,118 theaters may finish up$3.8M Friday and what is merely aDollar10M opening for that weekend for the way front-loaded it might be. (That’s what went down to Zac Efron in Charlie St Cloud.)Through Sunday,Hollywood eyes is going to be focused onits starTaylor Lautner in the first leading guy role within an action thrillerbecause he’s been greatly sought after — most probably due to his enormous Twi-hard group of followers and aggressive promotion of his films –but not due to any solo box office that the 19-year-old has been doing yet. On the other hand, I’velearned thatLautner’s $36M-budget action thriller was outspent 4-to-one in marketing dollars by both The new sony and Warner Bros prior to a few days ago. (Shame on Lionsgate’s Jon Feltheimer for tying everybody’s hands despite powerless Alli Shearmur pleaded.)Therefore the jury continues to be on whether this Twilight kid can open an envelope, particularly in as rotten a examined movie as that one was directed by John Singleton. (“Silly” and “convuluted” were what used most frequently to explain it.) Audiences didn’t think it had been as bad as experts, passing on a B- CinemaScore.Bad Lionsgate can’t appear to create a decent movie or market one any longer. A $10Moutcome is under the $12M-$14M range that the studio explained it required to show a “nice profit” for that film.”ButTaylors an excellent kid. Hes labored hard for all of us, doing 8 national Television shows and endless levels of press,” among the executives stated in my experience. “We be aware of opening weekend box office earnings for Taylors Twilight co-stars, which means this falls within the zone of the items ended up being to be anticipated. You will find plenty of movies opening a few days ago to a number of audiences, but ours is laser-specific to tweens and that we aspire to dominate that market.”Lionsgatesimultaneously streamed the premiere for an additional 20 regional marketplaces and broadcast the Red-colored Carpet online as ‘The Abduction Fan Premiere Live Event’with 50M impressions.Media promotions incorporated ABC Family andChannel One, the in-school network that will reach 2.3 million teens aged 1517.Other youth-focused exploitation includedan announcer place for Tay-Tay in the VMAs (associated with a contest to ‘Get Kidnapped’ towards the honours). It wasn’t nearly enough. 5.Remains to appear if Abduction can edge out Killer Elite whichalso might be $10M for that weekend from 2,986 theaters. However when veteran stars like Robert DeNiro, Jason Stathem, and Clive Owenas an intriguing trio still can’t knock-off Lautner solo inside a lousy movie, that’s worth observing. Open Road Films is expressingoptimism that itspic will probably go upon Saturday after its $3.5M debut Friday. CinemaScore would be a better B. I hear Open Roadacquired the film for free, only P&A, therefore it’ll be nicely lucrative. Pretty good for the organization’s first release.A couple of notes concerning the Killer Elite advertising campaign: it had the predictablyheavy presence in sports including an ‘NFL on FOX’ TV promotion having a “Killer” prize of visit to LA to spend time using the Fox sports on-air men, apromotion with Spike TV’s UFC Fight Evening, as well as Comedy Central’s Charlie Sheen Roast.P Niro designed a rare late-evening talk show appearance on Due To Jimmy Kimmel Live where he sitting lower with Kimmel’s security officer-switched superstar interviewer Guillermo. AndMTV Systems did an immediate email campaign to focus on demos inside their very largecustomer database. Here’s the relaxation from the Top Ten 6. Contagion (Participant/Warner Bros) Week 3 [3,136 Theaters] Friday $2.8M, Believed Weekend $9M, Believed Cume $57.5M 7. Drive (FilmDistrict) Week 2 [2,904 Theaters] Friday $2M (-50%), Believed Weekend $6M, Believed Cume $21.6M 8. The Assistance (Participant/DreamWorks/Disney] Week 7 [2,695 Theaters] Friday $1.3M, Believed Weekend $4.5M, Believed cume $154.5M 9. I Don’t Understand How She Will It (Weinstein Co) Week 2 [2,490 Theaters] Friday $700K (-55%), Believed weekend $2M,Believed Cume $8M 10. Hay Dogs (The new sony) Week 2 [2,408 Theaters] Friday $600K (-62%), Believed Weekend $1.8M, Believed Cume $8.5M FRIDAY 4 PM: On holiday. So box office is introduced for you from the sunny climate in which the palms sway over time towards the dancing trade winds… But home there’s a fierce fight happening. They are very early grosses, and my sources say Rentrak continues to be going through problems today — this provides you with Hollywood much more Maalox moments than normal. The new sony’s Moneyball starring Kaira Pitt won't be any. 1 with approximately $8M Friday and perhaps mid-$20sM for that weekend. That solid number helps Kaira Pitt’s honours chances within this well-received male-centric sports movie. At this time Alcon Entertainment/Warner Bros’ Dolphin Tale and Lionsgate’s Abduction are fighting for No. 2 with around $6M today and what is high teens for that weekend. Interesting, since the heartstrings-tugging pic was monitoring far better. On the other hand, Rachelle Lefervre’s action thriller is playing in 389 less theaters. So anybody who stated this Twilight kid couldn’t open an envelope is wrong, wrong, wrong: you will find major stars who does be thrilled with this outcome, particularly in as rotten a examined movie as that one. Open Road’s Killer Elite looks a notch lower – maybe $5M today, and low teens for that weekend. Frequent updates coming with full analysis.

Music Box Takes U.S. Rights To Canadas Oscar Entry Monsieur Lazhar

Chicago (Sept. 22, 2011) Music Box Films has acquired all US rights to the French-Canadian film MONSIEUR LAZHAR, Canadas official submission to the 2012 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The film won the Audience Award at this summers Locarno Film Festival and was named Best Canadian Feature last week at the Toronto International Film Festival. Written and directed by Philippe Falardeau, MONSIEUR LAZHAR tells the story of an immigrant substitute teacher (played by Monhamed Fellag) who brings emotional stability to a middle school class shaken by the suicide of their well-liked teacher. The film is the latest production of Microscope, the same Montreal-based production company that produced the Academy Award-nominee “Incendies.” The deal was negotiated by Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, a partner in international sales agency Films Distribution and Music Box Films’ managing director Edward Arentz. “This is a film that takes you by surprise and stealthily taps into deep wellsprings of emotion in ways that don’t feel manipulative. Releasing this kind of intelligent and moving filmmaking is a privilege and we thank Films Distribution for the opportunity to present MONSIEUR LAZHAR to US audiences,” says Arentz. This is the first time we are working with Music Box. After MONSIEUR LAZHAR premiered in Toronto, we had several US distributors vying for our movie. We chose to work with Music Box for their impeccable track record and their true dedication to foreign language movies, and most of all, for their sheer enthusiasm for this film. We know they will give MONSIEUR LAZHAR the exposure it deserves in the US market, says Brigaud-Robert. Music Box plans a spring 1st quarter 2011 release.

The espionage action/thriller is the first feature in a potential franchise from Canadian private equity player New Franchise Media, which last year acquired the worldwide film, TV and digital rights to a slate of ten thriller novels by Archer. PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival: 13 Films to Know The plan is to also create an action sequel based on Archer's "Honor Among Thieves" novel using a recurring character from "A Matter of Honor," Adam Scott, as the main focus. "Jeffrey Archer is a master storyteller whose suspenseful plots and compelling characters have the potential for a multi-feature film franchise with both domestic and international appeal," Marshall said Monday in a statement. Toronto 2011: Lionsgate Enters Early Talks to Pick Up Jennifer Westfeldt Comedy 'Friends With Kids' Jeffrey Steiner, New Franchise's president and CEO, added Marshall represents the talent and track record he wants to attach Archer's properties to. He explained Marshall and Archer already know one another through a mutual appreciation for sports, and the Hollywood producer knows how to adapt a 1970s-era espionage novel into an action movie after turning the Robert Ludlum novels into the Bourne franchise. Toronto 2011: Festival Director Cameron Bailey Embraces Public Aspect of Event (Q&A) Marshall was also attracted to Archer's best-selling novels selling internationally, assuring a global base for the eventual A Matter of Honor and Honor Among Thieves studio releases. "It's not just good enough for Hollywood to be comfortable if a movie will sell in America. They want to know it will sell around the world," Steiner said. The New Franchise Media topper added he aims to shoot his screen adaptations of Archer novels in Toronto, but will likely include international locations. No word yet on a budget for the action movie adaptations, or attaching a cast or director. Toronto 2011: Samuel Hadida Options Film Rights to 'Golgo 13' Steiner said a short-list of screenwriters has been drawn up and a first draft will be pursued over the coming months while Marshall finished up principal photography on Bourne Legacy. Brooks of Bloom, Hergott, Diemer, Rosenthal & LaViolette represented The Kennedy/Marshall Company. TORONTO 2011: Sarah Polley Talks Test Screening, Oscar Prospects (Q&A) Archer in a statement said of the Canadian-Hollywood pact: "I am delighted to be working alongside Frank Marshall, one of Hollywood's most respected producers. Frank is a perfect partner to help translate my work from the written page to the big screen, and I congratulate Jeff Steiner on pulling off this great collaboration." A Matter of Honor portrays a young ex- military officer character, Adam Scott, who unwittingly comes between rival intelligence agencies in pursuit of an object that can change the global balance of power. Steiner, the former Toronto bureaucrat behind Pinewood Toronto Studios, last year acquired an option on Archer's novels with an eye to striking international co-productions to bring them to the screen. A one-time head of the Toronto Economic Development Corp., Steiner stick-handled the development of the Pinewood studio on the city's waterfront, ahead of launching New Franchise Media. Toronto 2011: Market in Early Slump New Franchise's deal with Archer includes option to turn his best-selling novels into movie or TV projects. Archer, a one-time British politician who turned to penning page-turning novels, was sent to jail in 2001 after being found guilty of perjury and perverting the course of justice during a high-profile trial. After emerging from prison, Archer resumed press tours for his novel releases, and during two appearances in Toronto struck up a relationship with Steiner. Dark Equine: Venice Film Review

Following the provocative narrative, stylistic and political gambits of Todd Solondz's last film, Existence Throughout War time, the much more easy and straightforward tale related in Dark Equine feels as though something caught from the author-director's desk drawer. Never under watchable and packed with trademark negativity so extreme it's sometimes funny, the brand new film is nevertheless saddled having a protagonist so narrowly and unlikably presented that, ultimately, he doesn't appear well worth the time dedicated to him. His work in a commercial sense challenged at the very best of occasions, this relatively minor entry from Solondz faces a larger-than-usual struggle within the theatrical arena.our editor recommendsThe Scene in the Venice Film Festival 2011Venice Film Festival: Places to stay and Eat in ItalyVenice Film Festival: 10 Movies to KnowRelated Subjects•Venice Worldwide Film...•Toronto Worldwide Fil... PHOTOS: Venice Film Festival: 10 Movies to understand An overweight thirtysomething schlub frantically missing social abilities, Abe (Jordan Gelber) pushes through his little corner around the globe, belly pointing the way in which, being an affront towards the benefits of human decency and accomplishment. Although he will get the telephone number of the quiet lady, Miranda (Selma Blair) he meets in the Jewish wedding that opens the image, Abe appears unaware regarding their own cluelessness he lives together with his parents (Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow), hates his effective physician brother (Justin Bartha), keeps a workplace at his father's business but doesn't do anything whatsoever, collects children's plastic figures and burns plenty of gas in the yellow Hummer. In ways, he's like Paddy Chayevsky's Marty, a pathetic little large guy who's not receiving any more youthful and requires a lady along with a existence. But significantly, he's sleep issues from the gold coin: Rather than being described sensitively and sympathetically, he's displayed like a useless slug that has absolutely nothing to offer. "You need to just face the reality,Inch he exclaims to his concerned mother, who asks, "What's the truth?" "That people're all terrible people!," retorts Abe, which's the way in which these bad taste New You are able to-area folks appear. Abe is angry more often than not, except when he talks with Miranda, who also lives together with her parents, appears terminally depressed and morose and it is stricken with hepatitis B within the bargain. PHOTOS: The Scene at Venice Film Festival Miranda's acceptance of Abe's brash marriage proposal cues a forced supper party of future in-laws and regulations so strained celebrate Woodsy Allen's encounter with Diane Keaton's family in Annie Hall (also including Walken) seem like the party of the season on her part, Miranda beholds her betrothed's bed room, that is centered by kids' toys along with a World Book set. Miranda comes with an ex, Makmoud (Aasif Mondvi), from Dubai, whom she's keen for Abe to satisfy but, once they do, Abe quickly slugs him. Traditional Abe, you could rely on him to complete the best factor. Alternating from a naïve solicitude toward Miranda and ferocious hostility toward virtually everybody else, Abe is not so good company to start with and turns into a tedious character if this's apparent he's not determined to acquire further insight or self-understanding. A lot more than the majority of the director's films, Dark Equine is dedicated to one character instead of with an ensemble, to reduced returns. But past the belligerent Abe, what limits interest this is actually the directness from the script's presentation of the warped, stunted personality a specific item within the first couple of minutes is what you'll get, whereas the twisty stories and crazy facts of Solondz's best films acrue to sometimes astonishingly perverse and bracingly nasty effect. Dark Equine is much more of the sketch and also the primary character may have better offered among several inside a group, instead of being enforced about the audience full-time. It's possible to scarcely fault Gelber, because he fully and vigorously provides the overbearing characteristics known as for by his director. It could also be observed that, if the youthful Harvey Weinstein ever be a character inside a film, Gelber, a minimum of physically, may be the guy to experience him. Probably the most appealing performance, however, originates from Blair in the beginning scarcely in a position to speak, her physically and psychologically impaired Miranda creates growing sympathy and surprise. Walken, Farrow, Mondvi, Bartha and, like a vampy colliege who occurs to Abe (a minimum of in the imagination), Donna Murphy all click effectively in caricature mode. Musical and design aspects are consistently inside a mocking register.
